Today we have Rachel Sharpe with us talking about how she came up with the idea for her book Cold Ambition, the first in the Jordan James, PI series. Having read this book already, Donald said that this is a book that has you wishing from the first page you could read faster. The story is written in first person as many detective stories are, but the characters’ interactions and conversations are so well interwoven with the heroine’s that you don’t notice. The story is full of twists, dead ends, and surprises. Rachel Sharpe has created in her heroine, Jordon James, a character that has depth. Jordon has family problems, boyfriend issues, job issues, and issues in trying to solve a twenty-year-old cold case murder. The other characters that surround Jordon have their own distinctive characteristics. Donald is looking forward to seeing more in this series from this author.

So Rachel, Cold Ambition is your debut novel and the first book in the Jordan James, PI series. That means you have frequently been asked, and we are asking, that question most asked of new authors, which is, “Where did you come up with the idea for this book?”
As a lifelong resident of New Orleans with family ties to the East Coast, having Jordan James live and work in Boston seemed like a natural choice to me. And, while Jordan is not based on me or my life, there are similarities between us. I grew up watching re-runs of Magnum, PI and was always drawn to the exciting life he led to the point I wanted to become a private investigator myself.
While I never fulfilled this dream, I have succeeded in fulfilling another dream, becoming an author, and have created a world where my heroine can experience my childhood dream through this series. I’m thrilled that Jordan’s story is finally being told and look forward to readers getting to know her in this and future books.
Okay, that’s where the idea came from, so here is a blurb about Cold Ambition:
“It was my life-long dream to become a private eye. Little did I know that with my very first case, that dream would become a life-threatening nightmare…”
When Jordan James decided to embark on a career as a private investigator, she never could have imagined that a chance encounter would lead to her staring down the barrel of a gun on the roof’s edge of a high-rise building. As she begins to investigate her first case, the puzzling murder of a prominent businessman that has left Boston’s finest mystified for more than two decades, she finds herself suddenly immersed in a treacherous underworld brimming with betrayal, raw greed, and political subterfuge of international proportions. In the midst of this, she discovers she is falling for her mysterious client despite the hints of his dark past. Can this feisty Southern girl with a penchant for trouble solve this baffling case or is she doomed to become another tragic chapter in an international conspiracy?
Jon lifted his glass and finished off his soda. “Would you consider hiring me as an assistant?” I stared at him blankly.
He can’t be serious, I thought. This must be some kind of joke. I laughed. He raised an eyebrow and narrowed his green eyes. “What’s so funny?”
I stopped laughing. “You are kidding, right? I mean, why would I need an assistant? I don’t even have clients! I can’t pay you…”
He looked down at his empty plate and frowned. Sighing loudly, he answered, “Well, you wouldn’t have to pay me … at first. Let’s say I’ll be working off whatever that broken arm would cost.”
“The actual total or whatever I owe after insurance?”
He winked. “Whatever comes first.” He held out his hand. “Do we have a deal?”
I stared at his outstretched hand and then looked into his eyes. I couldn’t understand why he was offering this, but I figured that a guy like Jonathan Riché had an angle for every situation and he must have concocted some crazy scheme, which would make me later regret this agreement. On the other hand, since he was offering to work for free, it wasn’t going to cost me anything. Deciding to live in the moment, I reached across the table and shook his hand. He grinned. At the time, this business arrangement seemed more like a joke to me than a serious deal. Little did I know how much one handshake would change the course of my entire life.
