I just finished writing my last novel of 2021. I always feel like breaking into the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s Messiah after typing the last word of a book. However, as usual, right on the heels of my relief comes a burst of anxiety. I start second-guessing the plot, characters, and a hundred other issues. And then I wonder if I should just throw the whole thing in the trash.

Something you’ll hear bandied about quite often in writers’ circles is the exhortation to “Find Your Voice.” I heard it at my first writers’ conference and at every one since, and in my early days as a pre-published author, it was one of the most frustrating terms. Thrown out cavalierly, but no one could give me a solid definition of a writer’s voice nor how to discover where mine was hiding.

Recently, I got an email from Allyson, young, aspiring writer. She had a great question that I thought I’d answer here on the blog today. Her question was this: “I can’t decide whether I want to self-publish or traditional publish . . . I know you’ve done both, and I’ve been curious why you self-publish your YA books?”
